A SECOND MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) HAS BEEN SIGNED BETWEEN THE T. A.  Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) and the Ministry of Health governing the delivery of Programmes in General Nursing, Nursing Assistant and Midwifery Education.

The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health on Thursday May 29, 2008.

Signing on behalf of the College was Principal Dr. Jeffrey Britton and on behalf of the Ministry of Health Sen. Hon. Ann David- Antoine, Minister for Health and the Environment

This memorandum also takes into consideration the in-service training and continuing education programmes for nurses, nursing assistants and midwives; and spells out the role of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Grenada.

In 2001 Government sought to have the Grenada School of nursing incorporated into the T. A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC), this led to signing of the first Memorandum of Understanding in 2003 after extensive discussions and consultations to ensure that the transfer of the School of Nursing to the College met its objectives.

According to the Chief Nursing Officer the new Memorandum of Understanding is in reference to the following:

•        Setting the minimum requirements for entry into the various nursing education programmes

•        Monitoring and evaluation of nursing education programmes

•        Ensuring that the regional Nursing Body standards for nursing education are maintained.

•        Ensuring that the rules and regulations of the nurses and midwives council including those governing the examination of students are followed.

•        Certifying suitable nursing schools in Grenada together with buildings, tutors, facilities and curriculum

•        Prescribing qualifications for teachers of nursing and midwifery

She said the signing of this new Memorandum of Understanding is a symbol of collaboration and commitment of both T.A.M.C.C. and the Ministry of Health towards the improvement of nursing education in Grenada.

The Minister for Health Sen. Hon. Ann David- Antoine called it a red letter day saying that gone are the days when nursing was considered “Missionary work” and not a profession.

Sen. David- Antoine said the profession of nursing has grown over the years and the involvement of TAMCC could only mean better things to come.

The Minister said that Her Ministry and the Government of Grenada remain committed to ensuring that the nursing programmes being delivered at the College is well supported.

Principal of the College Dr. Jeffrey Britton has given the commitment of TAMCC to ensure that the programmes offered are up to international standards and said he is looking forward to the day when the College will be offering specialized nursing programmes and not just Midwifery.

Also witnessing the signing ceremony was Mr. Michael Pierre Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education.
