The development of a library at the T. A. Marryshow Community College's campus at Six Roads Carriacou is seen as critical; not only for better performances from the students of the College, but for the overall development of the human resource on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The Director of the Six Roads campus is Fleure Patrice and she is aggressively pursuing all avenues of funding for this ambitious project. In speaking with the Director, she enunciated the need for Carriacou and Petite Martinique to be up-to-date with the ever changing dynamics of the society and to be abreast with what is happening in the world. She believes a quality labour force is one of the main determinants of economic development. The library, she sees as one of the vehicles to be used in enhancing this development. Patrice's vision is of a facility that has materials relevant to the development reality of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. She stresses that the library is going to be for the people of the sister isles and it should be seen in that light. In keeping with technological advancement over the years; Patrice wants person to be able to access the facility onlline. In her words; "A library is no longer just about the hard copy, it is more about the availability of information and information sources; and the available technology must be harnessed if the islands are to take full advantage of the llibrary." Patrice says the society must embrace technology and the T. A. Marryshow Community College's (TAMCC) Six Roads campus is strategically positioned to guide this process. When the library is completed it will have, among other things, information on areas of development that are unique to Carriacou and Petite Martinique; e.g. boat building, small engine repairs, fish processing and agriculture practices. The aim is to have the facility user friendly thereby encouraging patrons to return from time to time. Already interest in the project has been shown by persons living in the Diaspora and a number of initiatives have begun to source books and other relevant materials for the Six Roads library. The building that will house the library has been completely refurbished; the building wil;l also house a computer lab and internet Cafe. |
